Bean's] efforts to establish a store in Pittsburgh, they did research here to find out about the area and found us,” said Sean Brady, assistant executive director of Venture Outdoors. “In our discussions with them, we discussed the Family and Community Programs Initiative and they thought it very closely matched their corporate goals here.”

Map & Compass Basics

REI will present a Class aimed at the newcomer to map and compass. We will cover the basics such as understanding map symbols, orienting the map and compass, triangulation, declination adjustment, and reading terrain features. Participants are encouraged to bring their own compasses.

Allegheny Trails – Day Hike

Baughmann Rocks – Ohiopyle
With hunting season in full swing we’ll take a break from backpacking by doing a Sunday day hike in Ohiopyle. This hike is good for getting your blood moving as the initial climb is steep, but it’s a gentle hike back down into the town. This is an 8 mile hike with a fantastic panoramic view of the valley below that is hard to duplicate in Pennsylvania.

On Wednesday November 5th, the first lecture kicks off with “The Science of Bicycle Riding” given by Dr. Bret Goodpaster, PhD. from the University of Pittsburgh. Bret’s lecture is the first of six lectures in this year’s free series.

Warren Miller's Children of Winter- Coming to PGH

It’s all part of Warren Miller’s Children of Winter, the world’s largest action sports film, which is set to music by Radiohead, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Beck and others. Shown in crystal-clear high definition, the film tour crisscrosses the nation and nine countries worldwide. Join Venture Outdoors as we bring the excitement to Pittsburgh for the first time Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the Carnegie Library in Homestead.

You’ll have a chance to bring the whole gang to the family friendly matinee at midday, make a night out with dinner and beer tasting, or simply grab the feature film with both hands and hang on. A special appearance at dinner by Chris Anthony, one of the athletes in Children of Winter, makes this event a don’t miss opportunity!
