Family Programs Still Going Strong

It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down and school bells will soon be ringing. This summer has been a great start to our Family and Community Programs and we’re finishing strong with a some of our most popular trips and our biggest festival yet! Check out the upcoming activities below:

Family Fishing Derby
We’ll provide the bait and rods, so bring the whole family for this fun-filled catch and release fishing derby! A picnic style lunch will be provided (while supplies last).
Participants 16 and above who do not have their fishing licenses should attend an educational workshop, beginning at Noon and lasting approximately 1 hour.
Date: Saturday, August 15. Noon- 3 p.m.
Location: South Side Riverfront Park (near the Western PA Conservancy flowerbed)

Treasure Hunt Hike
Embark on a special mission to find hidden treasures in the park! Hand-held GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) units will be used to locate the treasures, or caches in this family friendly adventure. No experience necessary.
Date: Saturday, August 22; 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Location: Frick Park Environmental Center
Price: $5 per person

Free Family Outdoor Festival – Last of the season!
Join us on Saturday, August 29 from Noon- 4 PM at Allegheny Commons West for a day of outdoor fun for the whole family. This festival is guaranteed to be the biggest yet! Come sample a little of everything we do — all for free! Kids and parents can climb the rock wall, treasure hunt with a GPS unit and take a short bike ride. Allegheny Commons West is located on the North Side, across from the National Aviary. Street parking is available. This location is also bus accessible.
Activities and exhibitors will include:

  • Rock climbing wall
  • Kayaking on Lake Elizabeth (3′ deep, perfect for beginners)
  • Treasure Hunting with GPS units
  • Guided Bike Rides (bicycles and helmets provided)
  • Kids’ craft activities provided by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
  • Henna temporary tattoos and face painting by the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh
  • Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium Mascot
  • Birds from the National Aviary
  • Andy Warhol Museum interactive exhibit
  • Fun with Bugs exhibit featuring roach races and bug petting zoo
  • Pitt African Drumming Ensemble
  • Food by the Istanbull Grill and Big Sam’s Memphis BBQ
