Montour Trail: A ride through history

December 3, 2009 by admin

You might not know it, but the Montour Trail has played a pretty important role in the history of Pittsburgh. This trail is the path that carried coal out of the hills of Pennsylvania and into the steel industry of Pittsburgh.

But that’s not all, the layers of rock unearthed to create the trail tell the story of ancient coal swamps dating back to the last Ice Age! This is just a taste of the history participants on the Geology of the Montour Trail Ride learned from Albert D. Kollar, Geologist for Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Section of Geology and Invertebrate Paleontology.

Along the route they also crossed three trestle bridges, went through two tunnels and stopped for lunch at a beautiful spot overlooking the Chartiers Creek Valley.

It was great ride filled with exciting history and beautiful views. Special thanks to Trip Leader Robert Habegger for sharing his photos from the ride!
