Allegheny River closed this Weekend

The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta is taking place this weekend. This 3-day FREE event features spectacular air, land and water entertainment! On Sunday, July 5th, head down to Kayak Pittsburgh Downtown for free 15-minute kayaking lessons and participate in Sunday’s Regatta Green Extreme - bass tournament, national dragon boat championships, free kayaking and more.
During the Festival, the Allegheny River will be closed to recreational boat traffic. Kayak Pittsburgh Downtown is unable to rent kayaks on Friday, July 3rd and Saturday, July 4th. Water and merchandise will still be available.

It’s a 3-day weekend for the staff at Venture Outdoors, so sign up early for our Fourth of July festivities. Bicycle Film Festival

The Bicycle Film Festival is coming to town Thursday, July 2 through Saturday, July 4! Film topics cover all kinds of bikes and biking including Tall Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats, Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Cycling and Recumbents. Interconnectedness Hike Series

A hiking series is taking place in Pittsburgh this summer focused on Inter-connectedness. Venture Outdoors, in coordination with the Student Conservation Association, is uniting many of the Region’s leaders in environmentalism, spirituality, and art.
The Interconnectedness Series will offer Pittsburgh residents a variety of techniques to explore how our world functions as a complex, dynamic whole. Each hike will be co-led by an ecologist, a spiritual personality, and an artist.

About the Bike Tour:
WYEP radio show hosts Rosemary Welsch (Afternoon Mix) and Mike Canton (Soul Show) will lead us on a ride along Pittsburgh’s riverfront trails. We’ll pedal down to the Point and across to the South Side and stop at WYEP’s “green” studio for a tour. Then we’ll hop back on our bikes to finish the loop. WYEP members can call the Venture Outdoors office to receive the Members price. A portion of the fee goes to support WYEP.
Tandem Freestyle Canoe Clinic

Take this opportunity to learn precision tandem canoe maneuvering from the current national freestyle champions. This ACA sanctioned, full day class will teach the basic skills of the post, wedge, and sideslip. As a tandem team, you will leave the class more capable of intricate moves; and you will be paddling as a more cohesive and coordinated unit. This is not an introductory canoe course; the stern paddler must have a functioning “J” stroke and the bow paddler needs an acceptable forward stroke.

Join the VO Dragon Boat Team

Robyn Brady is organizing a Venture Outdoors Dragon Boat team to train for and compete in the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Challenge, sponsored by Steel City Dragons, Pittsburgh Paddlefish, and Three Rivers Rowing Association, on Sunday, July 5th, at 10:00 AM on the North Shore as part of the Three Rivers Reggatta. The last year VO had a team was in 2004 and Robyn would like to bring the ancient Chinese tradition of Dragon Boating back to the VO community. It costs $20 to participant. The fee covers the race fee and two practices with Steel City Dragons. Read more
