VO Members can COOK!

On Saturday, January 28 we held our annual Winter Members Day at Wilderness Voyagers in Ohiopyle State Park. The unseasonable temperatures made it seem more like a spring celebration, but we persevered without the snow and had over 100 members come to celebrate the outdoors.
Winning recipes from the cook-off!
The Camp Stove Cook-off is always a highlight of Winter Members Day! This year we had 9 participants show off their culinary prowess in three categories: appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Three winners prevailed: Larry Gioia with his Sweet and Sour Meatballs, Ben Moyer and his Venison Stroganoff, and last but certainly not least Alice Becket-Rumberger with a delightful Peach-Cherry Cobbler.
We wanted share a few of the winning recipes and the story behind them so you can try them out next time you’re camping. Let us know what you think, and enjoy!

Jump like Jo photo contest!

Are you always camera ready? If so, grab a friend and get your stretch on because we have the perfect contest for you! Starting February 1st we’re holding the very first “Jump like Jo” Contest. Who is “Jo” you ask? Well, that is a great question! Jo is the little character on the Venture Outdoors Logo and he/she is looking for all of you limber folks out there to start jumping into the air.

Trip Leaders are the ambassadors of our organization, and they get to visit some pretty cool places while sharing the outdoors with others! Sounds pretty cool, right?

Something big happened last week in the world of social media. Yes, Rupert Murdoch joined twitter, but that’s not what we’re talking about. Venture Outdoors Twitter account surpassed the 3,000 mark! That’s right – over 3,000 people want to hear what we have to say, we’re so honored.
Winter, or maybe Spring, Members Day

Don’t get me wrong… we’re enjoying the unseasonably warm temperatures, but right now Winter Members Day almost feels like spring members day. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for snow and planning a great winter celebration in Ohiopyle on Saturday, January 28.
Free Winter Workshops

Sometimes we all need a little extra motivation to go outside when it’s cold. This winter will probably be no different. That’s why we’re offering five free winter workshops in January to help you get comfortable with snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
Workshops will be held indoors at your local REI stores and at Allegheny Chesapeake Physical Therapy in Shadyside. Each session is taught by Venture Outdoors Volunteer Trip Leaders (aka our Rock Stars). They’ll discuss the gear you need for each sport, techniques you’ll use when on the trail, and some of the best places in the Pittsburgh region to try snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Some of our recommendations might be closer than you think!
Workshops are free, but will fill up quickly!
