Local nonprofit kicks off new programs and summer events in the North Side

Free Family Festival to be held at Frick Park

Venture Outdoors Family and Community Programs Initiative continues with festivals throughout city

(Pittsburgh, PA) – A free Family Outdoors Festival will be held Saturday, June 20 at Frick Park as the first of three similar events to be held throughout the city as part of the Venture Outdoors Family and Community Program Initiative.

The Frick Park Family Outdoors Festival will become another proactive step in the Family and Community Programs Initiative. The initiative seeks to increase the diversity of the of the outdoors community through a series of progressive steps to include minority populations in outdoor recreation.

Free Kayaking at Kayak Pittsburgh – Lake Elizabeth on Saturday, June 6
Money raised from teen-led Ultimate Frisbee ® tournament will provide for 150 free kayak sessions.

(Pittsburgh, PA) On Saturday, June 6, youth and families will be the beneficiaries of money raised by a teen-led Ultimate Frisbee® tournament held during Global Youth Service Day, by taking part in free kayaking at Allegheny Commons, Lake Elizabeth.

The first 150 participants will be eligible to receive free kayak sessions as part of Venture Outdoor’s Kayak Pittsburgh program. Kayaking begins at 11 a.m. at Lake Elizabeth, located inside the Allegheny Commons across the street from the National Aviary on Pittsburgh’s Northside.

Beyond Bikes Day Celebrated with Free Cycling Event

With Major Taylor Cycling Club and Kingsley Association, Venture Outdoors continues Family and Community Program Initiative to engage minority populations in outdoor recreation.

(Pittsburgh, PA) – A free family bike extravaganza, Beyond Bikes Day, will offer introduction to cycling through rides led by the Pittsburgh Major Taylor Cycling Club. Bike safety inspections will be provided by Bike Pittsburgh and Free Ride Youth Programs.

The event will be held Saturday, May 30, at the Kingsley Association Community Center at 6435 Frankstown Avenue from noon to 3 p.m. This particular event will encourage biking as a family-friendly activity, as well as showcase some of the bike lanes in Pittsburgh, particularly the bike lane along East Liberty Boulevard. Riders are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets. A limited number of loaner bikes will be available. Raffle prizes will be given away throughout the day, including kids’ bikes and biking gear.

New Creative Policy Discussion Series Launches

Venture Outdoors Initiative to Bring Minorities Closer to Nature

Venture Outdoors Fest kicks off new programs and summer events

(Pittsburgh, PA –May 1, 2009) – Venture Outdoors aims to engage minority populations in outdoor recreation through a multi-year Family and Community Programs Initiative kicking off at the Venture Outdoors Festival, Saturday, May 16.

For eight years, Venture Outdoors has served the Pittsburgh community as a nonprofit organization, now engaging over 30,000 people a year through Kayak Pittsburgh and public and private programming. The organization’s membership exceeds 5,000, a definite sign of a growing outdoors community. However, only five percent of those who participate in these programs are not Caucasian, whereas 16 percent of Allegheny County is African American, Hispanic and Asian. Venture Outdoors would like to close that gap.

The initiative’s official kickoff event, the Venture Outdoors Festival, will be held at Point State Park, Saturday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This free festival is part of the city’s Great Outdoors Week. A Family and Community Programs booth will be set up where participants will try bike bowling and have the opportunity to meet the organizations working on this initiative. Venture Outdoors is working with the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Kingsley Association and the AGH Northside Partnership.

(Pittsburgh, PA – May 1, 2009) The Ninth Annual Venture Outdoors Festival, the region’s premier outdoor recreation event, will be held Saturday, May 16, 2009, rain or shine at Pittsburgh’s Point State Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year, the Venture Outdoors Festival will kick off the organization’s new Family and Community Programs initiative.

“The Venture Outdoors Festival itself brings together the numerous outdoor recreation groups of the region,” said Sean Brady, Assistant Executive Director of Venture Outdoors. “This year we are putting special emphasis on growing the diversity of the outdoors community to include even more people from urban neighborhoods through our Family and Community Programs initiative.”

The Venture Outdoors Festival, sponsored by UPMC Health Plan, is a free event where individuals and families can sample the many outdoor activities available in our region. The event features kayaking, biking, dragon boating, rock climbing, fishing and more. Participants can hone their skills or try these activities for the first time — with experienced instructors to provide guidance — and learn where to enjoy these activities all season long.

Venture Outdoors hosts Banff Mountain Film Festival April 10th - 11th

(Pittsburgh-March 31, 2009) - Venture Outdoors will bring The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour to Pittsburgh this April for the seventh consecutive year. The festival will be held at the Byham Theater on April 10th and 11th at 7:00 PM.

“Venture Outdoors wanted to create a program that works for Pittsburgh. Venture Outdoors offers entertaining, seasonal outdoor employment!

Positions include:
Kayak/Canoe Attendant - Positions are available for both Downtown Pittsburgh (end of April through end of October) and North Park locations (Memorial Day to Labor Day). The concession attendant is a temporary, seasonal employee who will assist in fast-paced customer service duties for the kayak and canoe rental concession. The employee will assist customers in all facets of paddling kayaks and canoes. This may include customer service, managing and maintaining equipment, explaining use of gear and emergency procedures, taking and processing payments, and selling merchandise. This individual should be detail-oriented, friendly, outgoing and customer-oriented. Read more

Venture Outdoors Bikes New York

Registration is open to participate in the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour in NYC!

For more than 30 years, the Five Boro Bike Tour through New York City has been the attraction of thousands of bikers, now drawing 30,000 people a year to recreationally ride through traffic-free streets of the city in early May. This year, Venture Outdoors plans to represent a 45-person Pittsburgh team on this trip, proudly displaying Terrible Towels on their garb as they complete the 42-mile loop through the city?s neighborhoods.
