Venture Outdoors celebrated its 8th birthday on Saturday, June 27 at our annual Summer Members Day at the North Park Boat House. It was a picturesque summer day filled with blue skies, bright sun, and outdoor fun. 345 of our Members participated in an afternoon of kayaking, climbing, biking, and fishing. Also, our friends from the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts were on hand to share art activities with our Members. VO provided the burgers and hot dogs on the grill and our generous Members brought a wide array of side dishes and enough desserts to give everyone a cavity.

Produce Pedal Photos

Participants on the Venture Outdoors Produce Pedal enjoyed the lush scenery and smooth trail of the Great Allegheny Passage as they rode the 28 mile round trip from Boston to West Newton last Saturday. After arriving in West Newton they enjoyed lunch at local eateries before pedaling back to Boston.

Curry Hike

The Panhandle Trail is one of Pittsburgh’s best kept secrets, but participants on the Venture Outdoors Curry Hike discovered this beautiful area on Saturday, June 6. The hike ended with a succulent meal prepared by Indian curry cook, Kanak Iyer. Check out some photos of the hike below!

Three Rivers Paddle

Saturday morning was a little foggy to say the least. But the fog didn’t last long and couldn’t stop our Three Rivers Paddle from heading up the Allegheny River towards Pine Creek. Participants enjoyed the calm waters and natural scenery of Pine Creek and then floated back down the Allegheny toward Pittsburgh while taking in the skyline views. Special thanks to trip leader Bill Grove for leading and David Bennett and Larry Gioia for assisting.
2009 Venture Outdoors Festival Wrap-up

Thank you to everyone who came to the Venture Outdoors Festival. Point State Park made a great setting for thousands to enjoy kayaking, biking, climbing, yoga and fishing. Even a little rain in the afternoon couldn’t tarnish the mood; exhibitors, volunteers and festival goers enjoyed an entire day of festivities.

Venture Outdoors Bikes the 5 Boros

Venture Outdoors’ trip to New York City for the 5 Boro Bike Tour was a great experience! 20 riders awoke early Sunday morning to line up with 29,980 riders for the 40 mile adventure. For the next 4-5 hours riders wound their way through the 5 Boros, up and down the bridges, and past the amazing architecture of the Big Apple. Even though it rained, the temperatures were warm enough to keep the riders smiling until the celebration at the end.

Mother/Daughter Backpacking

The group enjoyed hiking, geocaching and cooking over a fire all while taking in the beautiful scenery of the Laurel Highlands.

South Side Slopes Hike

It truly was a beautiful day for a hike! Saturday, April 4th Trip Leader Sarah Benson led over 30 people on a 4-mile hike around Pittsburgh’s historic South Side Slopes. Hiking the slopes means climbing lots of steps and that is just what we did! Hiking Pittsburgh’s steepest neighborhood is hard work but the view from the top was well worth it.
Hike and Wine and Cheese Boat Cruise

Sure the view from Mount Washington is great but the view from a PittsburghWaterLimo is just as good and more unique! On Saturday, March 21 over thirty people followed Trip Leader Mike Consla on a hike over three different bridges and through Pittsburgh’s city center learning history along the way. The highlight of the trip was the finale when everyone climbed aboard a PittsburghWaterLimo for a scenic boat cruise around Downtown Pittsburgh. Participants sampled Spanish wine and cheese while taking in the unique views!
Stews and Microbrews Hike

What better way to warm up after a winter hike then with hot stew and craft beer? This was just the scenario on the Venture Outdoors Stews and Mircrobrews Hike on Saturday, January 31. Almost 30 people gathered for a hike covering several miles through the hills and valleys of North Park. Snow covered the landscape making the trees sparkle and the wildlife visible against a white background.
