Venture Outdoors (VO) had much to celebrate on Monday, January 16th. Our staff and volunteer crew joined forces with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) for the tenth year in a row to bring together hundreds of community members from around the city to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr!

Over the past 10 years our annual MLK Jr. Day in the Park celebration as grown into one of our largest and most enjoyable events, and we hope this year is no different! On Monday, January 16 join us at the Schenley Park Ice Rink for free activities and refreshments from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.

Here we go Pittsburgh, here we go! On Sunday, November 27 fans of Pittsburgh Sports and the City of Pittsburgh set out on a ‘black and gold’ themed geocache in Homewood Cemetery.

A great group of explorers joined us for a hunt through McKinley Park on Saturday, November 19 — they were geocaching of course, and it was a wonderfully warm afternoon.

It was a beautiful day for a walk on Saturday, October 22, and we had a great group come out to enjoy the Jack O’ Lantern Walk in Schenely Park. In costumes aplenty (my favorite being the mummy!) we set out to take in a little history of Pittsburgh’s second biggest park.

An outdoor celebration at Allegheny Commons capped off the 2011 Highmark Family Outdoor Festivals, and we went out with a bang. Saturday, August 27th was our biggest festival of the summer!

It was a weekend of old-fashioned fun in the outdoors as we celebrated the National Wildlife Federation’s Great American Backyard Campout June 25-June 26. Sponsored by REI, the event took place at Raccoon Creek State Park and 23 participants enjoyed camping, hiking and learning in the great outdoors!

Yes, the forecast is dreary, but come on Pittsburgh take advantage of your official 10-day weekend, Great Outdoors Week! In celebration of Great Outdoors Week, we’ve got a slew of hikes, bike rides, rock climbing adventures and paddles scheduled between Friday, May 13 and Sunday, May 22. It’s all leading up the culmination on Saturday, May 21st – the Venture Outdoors Festival!

Allegheny Commons hike meets Abe Lincoln!

The sun was shining and there was a brisk chill in the air as families from around the city joined up to embark upon a historical winter walk in Allegheny Commons on the 12th of February. Our walk proved to be very interesting, as we learned about the rich history that encompasses this beautiful park.
