Quest reaches 1,000 hikers!

For the past five summers Venture Outdoors has posed a challenge. We offer the chance for hikers to do something unique, hard and invigorating – hike the 76 miles of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail in 8 day-long hikes. We call it the LHHT Quest, and over the first four years we have had 881 hikers put boots to trail.

Laura’s Long Walk

You may remember reading Trip Leader Laura Vayansky’s personal story of hiking the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail last fall. She hiked the 70 mile trail solo in six days. This spring Laura set out on a much bigger challenge, she started a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail on March 19th. Laura is hiking 2,181 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine!

… I lay there for a long time listening and trying to decide what to do. Crunch… Crunch… The problem was, the sounds were too far apart and there really was not that much gravel around the shelter. What could it be? After listening for a little longer, I started to recognize the direction it was coming from – very close to the shelf where my food bag was sitting.

Quest Hikers take on the Laurel Highlands Trail again

“It’s not an easy trail to hike, but it’s an easy trail to pick,” explained Kenn. There are numerous access points along the 70-mile trail, which follows a ridge between Ohiopyle State Park and Conemaugh Gorge. It’s easily broken into segments that are doable for “most people,” and the furthest access point is less than two hours from the city.
