Muffins in the Mountains: Recipes Included!

On the doorstep of peak autumn color for the Laurel Highlands, participants on October 4’s Muffins in the Mountains enjoyed a cool Sunday morning hike in Laurel Hill State Park. Along the way, we peeked into the history of Laurel Hill State Park’s CCC camp as well as the Jones Scott Singo Cemetery dating back to the early 1800’s.

Best Time to Bike!

Despite the soggy start, the Fall Foliage Bike Tour which traveled from Connellsville, PA to Cumberland, MD from Friday, October 9 through Monday, October 12, was a great success. From downtown Pittsburgh, a small and enthusiastic group set off for Connellsville to ride the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP). Though the weather wasn’t sunny, our dispositions were. One participant said, “Well, at least the trails won’t be crowded.”

335 Miles in 24 Hours: G-24 Relay Photos

In celebration of the G-20 Summit coming to Pittsburgh and to raise money for the Allegheny Trail Alliance, Venture Outdoors sponsored a G-24 Relay September 22-23. Fifteen cyclists rode 335 miles in 24 hours sustaining a speed of 15 mph for the entire trip! The riders rode through the night along the historic C & O Canal Towpath and Great Allegheny Passage, from Washington DC to Pittsburgh enjoying the wildlife and scenery the entire way!

Great Day for a Festival!

It started out rainy, but Saturday afternoon turned out to be a great day for our third Family Outdoors Festival. Allegheny Commons was a perfect setting for the days activities. Both young and old enjoyed kayaking for the first time on the shallow waters of Lake Elizabeth and many people took advantage of the park’s numerous paths on bike rides. There were several friendly animals wandering around to say hi, including the Pittsburgh Zoo polar bear and Aquarium shark.

Family Festival Photos

Saturday, June 20 was the first of our 3 Family Outdoor Festivals this summer. The playground at Frick Park was a great setting for this unique event featuring geocaching, climbing and several exhibitors. Around 200 people enjoyed the festival highlights such as an owl from the National Aviary, face painting and bike bowling.

Intro to Gardening for Kids

We had a great time at the Oak Hill Community Garden in the Hill District last Saturday. The group learned about vegetable and herb gardening, built two scarecrows and planted seeds to take home. Very special thanks to our friends from the Oak Hill Community for coming out on Saturday, as well as Clark Lingren for building the scarecrow structures!

Curry Hike

The Panhandle Trail is one of Pittsburgh’s best kept secrets, but participants on the Venture Outdoors Curry Hike discovered this beautiful area on Saturday, June 6. The hike ended with a succulent meal prepared by Indian curry cook, Kanak Iyer. Check out some photos of the hike below!

Three Rivers Paddle

Saturday morning was a little foggy to say the least. But the fog didn’t last long and couldn’t stop our Three Rivers Paddle from heading up the Allegheny River towards Pine Creek. Participants enjoyed the calm waters and natural scenery of Pine Creek and then floated back down the Allegheny toward Pittsburgh while taking in the skyline views. Special thanks to trip leader Bill Grove for leading and David Bennett and Larry Gioia for assisting.
