Venture Outdoors 250 Bike Tour Met the Challenge

Robert Zoppetti made history during the 250 Bike Tour from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh for the city’s birthday celebration. Not only was he part of the first large group to ride over the new Riverton Bridge in McKeesport, but he was the oldest in the Venture Outdoors Bike 250 group to do so. At 76 years old, Zoppetti biked the 335 mile-long journey in 8 days, meeting up with the PNC Legacy Relay Riders in McKeesport.
He was one of 87 riders who share his story of determination along the trail. The Venture Outdoors 250 Bike Tour, in conjunction with the PNC Legacy Trail Ride, the PNC Legacy Relay, and the Trail Town Celebrations along the Great Allegheny Passage, made for a hugely successful commemoration of Pittsburgh’s 250th birthday. “The relay ride was part of the Pittsburgh 250th celebration, which included 85 cyclists riding 335 miles from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh and 18 teams of relay riders who covered that distance in 24 hours. They were later joined by hundreds of cyclists in Mc- Keesport and Pittsburgh.”

This Saturday, October 4th, as a kick of to Pittsburgh Celebrates 250, The PNC Legacy Trail Ride will celebrate the opening of a 335-mile hiking and biking trail connecting Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh. The ride will finish on in Point State Park when families are encouraged to bike the last leg of The PNC Legacy Relay and The VO 250 Bike Tour, from the Hot Metal Bridge or PNC Firstside Center to Point State Park.

Description: Come join in a historic boat parade celebrating Pittsburgh\’s 250th Birthday. This grand river spectacle starts at 9:30 AM and runs until 11:00 AM, and will feature over 100 boats of all kinds. If you want to participate in the event as a non-motorized boater in a canoe or kayak, or if you are a private boater, you must register by October 1st. Designated docking will be provided on a first-come-first-serve basis to private motor boats, and all are encouraged to dock on Friday night, October 3rd, for a lighted boat party.
